Short biography

Sigmund A Anderssen is a professor of physical activity and health at the Department of Sports Medicine at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (NIH). He received his doctorate in 1996 at NIH, where he also completed his master's degree in 1990. Anderssen was the head of the Institute of Sports Medicine from 2011 to 2023.

In collaboration with the Directorate of Health and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, Anderssen has been pivotal in establishing a system for mapping the level of physical activity in the Norwegian population. This includes three surveys of children (ungKan1, ungKan2, and ungKan3) and three of adults and the elderly (Kan1, Kan2, and Kan3). Anderssen is a co-primary investigator  for the project Physical Activity in Childhood Cancer Survivors (PACCS), which focuses on physical activity among child cancer survivors. He has also been the project leader for several large studies, including The European Youth Heart Study and Active Smarter Kids (ASK). Sigmund has been one of the main authors of the Norwegian and Nordic recommendations for physical activity, and a co-author of the National Professional Guidelines for Diabetes. Anderssen has previously been the chairman of the National Council for Physical Activity.

Anderssen has mentored many masters and doctoral students, contributed to more than 200 publications in the field of physical activity and health. He has received several awards, including the Norwegian Medical Association's prize in preventive medicine.
