Short biography

Yngvar Ommundsen is professor emeritus in sport, exercise and health psychology in Department of Sport and Social Sciences. He got his PhD in sport science at Norwegian school of Sport Sciences (1992) about young soccer players concerned the role of self-esteem, perceived competence, motivation and symptoms of antisocial behaviour for dropping out from organized club soccer. He earned general teacher education (1975), specialist sport and physical education teacher education certificate (1977) and master in sport science (1979).

Taken together, Ommundsen has published more than 100 referee based research articles and book chapters in various areas of sport and health psychology comprising the role of self-conceptualizations, motivation, social-psychological and physical-environmental factors for psychological well-being and participation in sport, physical activity and physical education among young people, adults and the elderly. More recently, together with internal and external colleagues he has conducted various pieces of intervention research focusing on the role of various forms of physical activity, sport and play in school and leisure-time with respect to cognitive and psychosocial outcomes.

Yngvar Ommundsen has been employed in full position as associate professor at Norwegian School of Sport Sciences since 1994, full professor since 2004. He has been involved in several research projects as principal investigator, research fellow and PhD supervisor (Romsaas in Motion community intervention, project "Senior-løftet", project HEIA, PAPA project (EU financed), "Young and Active"“Goodness of fit in Norwegian Youth Sport", STORK Groruddalen cohort study (STORK-G) and ASK (Active, Smart Kids).
