Physiological development in young endurance athletes

PhD project

Purpose

Many of the physiological determinants of exercise performance mature throughout the childhood years, but we don’t know the relative contribution of habitual physical activity and physical growth and maturation to the development of for example VO2max in children. The purpose of this longitudinal study is to examine and compare how VO2max, muscle strength and running speed changes during adolescence in endurance trained and non-endurance trained children.

Project description

2 years old children will be recruited from cross country skiing clubs and primary schools. The same children will be measured once a year until they reach the age 16 years. The measurements will take place at the schools, at NIH and at our cooperative institutions.
