Workplace health and wellness promotion

Purpose

The research project will be carried out in cooperation with The Norwegian Post, and participants will be recruited among employees in The Norwegian Post and Bring. The purpose of this research project is to investigate how team-based interventions as part of a workplace health and wellness program influence the participant’s degree of physical activity, health and work-functioning. The intervention will be developed on the basis of a theory of motivation; Self-Determination Theory.

Project description

80% of the Norwegian adult population reported that their level of physical activity was below the amount per week recommended by the Norwegian Health Authorities. As a consequence, there is a higher risk of lifestyle related complaints and increased sickness absenteeism. For several decades, the worksite has been regarded as an important arena for health promotion because it is capable of reaching a large number of people, many of whom are at risk of negative health effects over time. Participation in the interventions is often fairly stable with less attrition compared to for instance community service programs. In addition, employer-initiated programs can potentially enhance the degree of cohesion and peer support for lifestyle changes form colleagues and management. How can workplaces facilitate an increased motivation for private lifestyle changes through a health promotion program?

This is an intervention study applying a randomized controlled trial design. Data will be collected by means of physiological tests and standardized, quantitative questionnaires. In addition, the intervention process will be evaluated and by means of qualitative interviews and observations.
