Projects with the potential for harm and stress for the participants and/or involving vulnerable groups must be approved by ERB before commencement.
The projects requiring approval from ERB meet these criteria:
- Humans are involved directly in an intervention (psychological and/or physical).
- The project has significant potential for injury and strain beyond what can be considered normal risk and strain for the participant.
- The project does not require approval from the Regional Ethical Committee (REK) - the project falls outside the scope of the Health Research Act.
Research projects involving vulnerable groups, including participants without consent competence or participants under the age of 16, must always be approved by NIH's ethics committee in cases where the project is not required to be submitted to REK. The same applies to research projects with the collection of human biological material and which are not required to be submitted to REK.
The individual researcher at NIH has an independent responsibility for ensuring that their own research is organized and carried out in accordance with research ethics norms.
The Board of NIH appoints members to the ERB for three-year terms. Each institute must be represented.
