Introduction

The main objective of the course is that the PhD candidate can document knowledge, skills and general competence related to planning and accomplishment of a PhD education.

Specifically, the course will include topics such as PhD regulations, research ethics, how to incorporate sustainable practices,project registration, publication channels and expectations related to the supervision process.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • use the PhD regulations and guidelines for PhD education at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences
  • use guidelines for research ethics that are relevant to their own field of research
  • use relevant publishing channels and databases, plan and prepare a complete research protocol/project plan
  • discuss planning of sustainable research projects, assess quality assurance and research ethics principles for collection, storage, and presentation of data
  • supervising master students

Learning methods and activities

The learning methods on the course include lectures, discussions, individual work, group work and oral presentations. A reflection note is submitted where the plan for own progress and development of own project including duties and responsibilities is presented.

Achievement of goals in the course requires a total study effort of approx. 60 hours. This includes a total of 10 hours of teacher-led teaching, 20 hours of work in seminar groups and 30 hours of self-study.

Assessment/exam

Oral presentation of own project that is assessed as pass/fail.
