  In the edited collection "Athletics in the Nordic Countries" scholars from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden explore historical developments and current phenomena in the sport of athletics (track and field). The chapters provide insight into sport officials, events, and athletes from the Nordic countries that have shaped the international athletics scene. The authors identify the leading role of sport leaders from Scandinavia in the foundation years and highlight how athletics’ events held in the region were milestones in the transformation of the sport. Athletics’ international governing body World Athletics was founded in Sweden in 1912 as the International Amateur Athletic Federation. Seventy years later, Finland hosted the first World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983. In between those turning points, Nordic officials and athletes promoted significant changes in athletics, and their innovative approaches continue to shape the development of the sport until today.

  On two occasions, in 1952 and 1994, the Olympic Winter Games were entrusted to Norwegian organizers. As the only Nordic country to have hosted winter Olympics, the organizers of both games presented a version of the Olympic Winter Games and their increasingly fundamental and sacred symbols, which were not always in accordance with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) official interpretation, nor the international public’s understandings of these symbols, their origin, and meaning. For the 1952 winter games, Norway developed an original, separate winter Olympic flame and torch relay. Both the flame and torch relay exemplify specific Norwegian nation building, based on national sporting and cultural traditions, but also the importance of cultural invented symbols in sport, and the challenges that arise when national interpretations and expressions meet international interpretations. Myths and interpretations of the significance of the Norwegian hamlet of Morgedal in Telemark within skiing history challenged the IOC’s preferred Olympic flame protocols at both the Oslo 1952 and Lillehammer 1994 Olympic Winter Games.

Målet er å gi et godt svar på hva som påvirker og forklarer norsk idretts viktige rolle i det norske samfunnet.

  As the Second World War emerged, sport's context changed from a sense of normalcy to increased political tension and eventually to war. Sports organizations in one way or another had to adapt. What happens to the claimed ‘un-political sport’ when the context in which it takes place becomes ever more politicized? Should sport take a stand or should it stick to the favourite position of Western sporting officials in the 1930s that ‘sport and politics should not mix’? Examining the small, occupied nations in Europe in particular helps answer these questions, as does considering the attitudes and politics of the international sports organizations in the critical years leading into the war: Was it possible to keep the Olympics going? What happened is explored based on recent research with primary and secondary sources, archive materials from the IOC and other organizations, as well as international research literature. Sport’s symbolic ambiguity as it related to peace and war was reflected in the different ways in which sportspeople and organizations reacted to WWII. Sport embraced contrasting actions, boycott and participation, watching and resisting, and still came out seemingly unstained. This enabled the idea of sport as a mainly un-political phenomenon to persist.

  The article considers the story of the Norwegian sports strike during the Second World War. What kind of resistance does the story reveal? What was the effect of a boycott of leisure activities like sports? The Norwegian sports organizations, unlike other international sports organizations, came to see themselves as part of the resistance movement against the Nazi regime during the German occupation from 1940 to 1945, using non-violent, civil disobedience as their weapon. Unprecedented historically and internationally, this meant that Norwegian sportsmen and women, for four and a half years, stopped participating in any way in sport. The boycott comprised sportsmen and spectators, regardless of whether the contestants were friends or foes, Allies or Nazis, Norwegians or German. Based upon previous and recent research the article contends that the sports strike can be considered an effective act of civil disobedience. It demonstrated in a visible way that civil resistance was possible, while the German and Nazi authorities sought to promote sports as a means of creating an impression of normality. Finally, the story of the sports strike can be read as a tale of the limitations of totalitarian regimes.

Det meste av boka handler om idrett i Nord-Norge i forhold til resten av Norge, men noen bidrag relaterer den også til Sverige, Finland og Russland (Sovjetunionen).

  This article studies similarities and disparities between the two nations England and Norway as they could be observed before and during the London 2012 Olympics, and discuss them in the historical perspective of geopolitical and sportive relations. The main perspective is how these relations have been seen and experienced from Norway. The article also studies whether the London Olympics of 2012 did present new forms of relationships between the two geographical neighbours. The article discusses the role of ball games, preferably team handball at the 2012 Games, as one example of where sporting interests differ. The article reflects upon these matters in a historical context. It builds upon traditional historical methods, document and media analysis. It also looks at the 2012 London Olympics against the background of the former London Games of 1908 and 1948, and the overall historical sports relations between England, ‘land of sport’ and a small country like Norway, who generally has been on the receiving end of these interchanges. Such asymmetric relationships invite to a critical use of perspectives like cultural imperialism and post-colonialism. The article discusses whether such perspectives can be fruitful also when one discusses matters between the so-called First World nations. As the title of the article indicates, Norway and England are both close, politically and culturally, while also being strangers to one another, e.g. in parts of the sports culture. The 2012 Olympics seemed to reinforce this impression.

  Norwegian explorers have for more than a century made a strong presence in the polar areas. One of their distinctions was their dedicated use of skis. This article examines the Norwegian affection for skiing in the polar areas. The will to quest and conquer the polar extremes, as well as the inland glaciers of Greenland, has been a part of Norwegian polar history, to such a degree that it can be termed a national characteristic. Through primary and secondary literature and other sources, the article discusses the historical background of this cultural practice, and how it has been able to survive into modern times. What is the significance of these modern expeditions which might otherwise be seen as mere repetitions of historic ventures? The article discusses polar skiing in the perspectives of modern sport, national identities and manliness.

  From an international football perspective football in Norway may be considered as a 'different sort of country'. This essay concerns itself with the tension between the interest in football in Norway and the geographical and topographical preconditions for the sport. This is discussed in three main parts. The first addresses the relation between centre and periphery: how to build a national football community when the local communities are so scattered and different in character? The second part about the 'outsider country' considers the special conditions for playing, the region-building character and the cultural significance of football in the north of Norway. Finally, the essay deals with the conditions for playing football in different economic and cultural circumstances. The importance of political decisions for the distribution of football in Norway is emphasized.
