Kort biografi

Simon Beames er professor i friluftsliv ved NIHs Institutt for lærerutdanning og friluftsliv. Han kom til NIH i 2019 etter 14 år ved University of Edinburgh. I Edinburgh opprettet og utviklet Simon Outdoor Journeys-programmet, som er en elevdrevet tilnærming for å tilrettelegge for lokal, tverrfaglig utendørslæring.

Før han begynte i akademia i 2001, jobbet Simon 10 år som friluftlivsslærer med unge mennesker, både ved å lede ekspedisjoner og undervise i Canada, USA og Sørøst-Asia. Universitetsstudiene hans inkluderte en Bachelor of Physical Education ved McMaster University, en Master of Science in Experiential Education ved Minnesota State University, og en doktorgrad om utenlandske ungdomsekspedisjoner ved University of Chichester.

Simon har utgitt seks bøker: Understanding educational expeditions, Learning outside the classroom, Outdoor adventure and social theory, Adventurous learning, Adventure & society, og Outdoor learning across the curriculum.  Hans kommende bok, Routledge handbook of mobile technology, social media, and the outdoors, vil bli utgitt i midten av 2024. Simon trives med å undervise i fri natur, i fjell, skog og villmark, så vel som i nærliggende byområder.

Hans kunnskapsutveksling med aktører i praksisfeltet fortsetter gjennom deling av undervisningsressurser på nettstedene Outdoor Journeys og Adventurous Learning; NIHs initiativ for friluftsstudier; og den nylig lanserte Outdoor Journeys -appen, som fasiliterer læring utenfor klasserommet ved hjelp av mobiltelefoner og nettbrett.

Simon er i redaksjonen for Journal of Experiential Education og Journal of Outdoor Environmental Education.
