Introduction

Teaching in Africa is a follow-up to the introductory course for those students who are participating in the Youth Sport Exchange Program through NIF or other organizations. In line with the idea of exchanging knowledge and understanding of the sport opportunities and limitations in development and peace work, NIH wants to equip students with knowledge and perspectives from a country in the south.

Prior to the start of teaching at the University of Western Cape, a short course will be given in relation to selected questions and issues relevant to the course. Teaching will take place at the University of Western Cape in Cape Town (UWC) in the second week of December. The course is a mandatory part of the study of “Sport, Culture and Development Cooperation”.

The topics covered during the course are as follows:

  • Gender issues in sport
  • Teaching and learning in different cultural backgrounds
  • HIV/AIDS and sport
  • Recreation in South Africa
  • Research Project
  • Mega sport events
  • NCDs in developing communities
  • Recreational and cultural activities (Traditional Games)
  • Sport and community development
